8 a.m. Blues

I went to bed with a blues song in my head. At 8:00 a.m. this morning, I sat down at the piano and started playing. By the time I had to go pick my baby up from work, it was on a CD. Best thing was, I finally found the time (and the motivation) to figure out the basics of my Fostex digital workstation, and came up with a nifty crossover post that fits nicely with both this week’s Poetry Thursday prompt (Being Someone Else), and as a continuation of last weeks’ Sunday Scribblings (What I’d Never Write About). As you may recall, given the two challenges of romance or country song, I was veering towards the latter. Well, the country song became a classic blues song instead.
In some ways, it’s totally not me. I’m a happily married white chick living in a nice house with a nice car and cats and apple trees – what the hell do I know from the blues anyhow? But at the same time, the greatest thing about the blues is that at some level they’re universal. No matter how lucky, how happy, how content we may be, at some point we’ve all felt down and out. Now more than ever, with tragedies unfolding it seems every day, when the news is just one big downer, when it seems like no matter what you do or how hard you try, nothing’s ever gonna change.
So here’s a shout out to all the classic trad blues artists who recorded onto wax and vinyl, got paid next to nothing, and forever changed the way the world listened to music, like Robert Johnson, Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters, Blind Lemon… the list goes on far past those I can name. They would probably laugh at me and tell me to keep my day job, and I hope you take it in the same light. Despite having spent far more time on it than I’d originally intended, it’s really just meant to be a bit of fun. Wearing someone else’s shoes, for one whole day, sunrise to sundown. Without further ado, here it is:
(I haven’t yet figured out how to insert one of those little players that lets you play MP3s right off the site, but it should still work; if not you can save it to play on your ‘puter later).

Woot! Excellent! So when are we starting that blues band? :)
Damn, I can’t listen to it – but I’m sure it’s cool.
you have the voice for the blues. great song.
just wanted to direct towards a flash mp3 player thing you can put on your site: http://www.premiumbeat.com/flash_resources/free_flash_music_player/#mp3Players
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
Twitches: If clicking on the link doesn’t automatically play it, try a right click and then “save as”. If you then open it on your computer from whatever folder you saved it in it should work (providing you can play MP3’s of course). Otherwise you’ll just have to imagine it I guess!
Michelle: Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out.
*ahem* I was laughing through most of it, but I really did enjoy it! :-D
