The forgotten shoulders
\nof February snow settle
\ninto the sun-starved earth
\nmud seeps into cracks
\nand crevices carved
\nby the relentless ice,
\nthe Loki spirit
\nof early morning frost
\nthat charms and dazzles
\neven as it kills<\/p>\n
This is the season
\nwhere old secrets
\nemerge from slowly
\nmelting tombs;
\npeople shying
\nfrom decomposed unknowns
\ndance sidestep
\nto avoid contamination<\/p>\n
Better to focus
\non the promise of beauty
\nhinted at by the return
\nof the solar warmth,
\nthe miniature Death Valleys
\nforged by meltwater cascades
\na flood to wash away
\nthe salt and silt,
\nthe guilt by association<\/p>\n
We must all look
\non our collective leavings
\nand sigh in righteous
\nconsternation, at this
\nyearly ode
\nto universal apathy
\nand then forget
\nwith every step
\nthat ever it was ours.<\/p>\n
