Welcome to our site! Hurly Burly is an early music ensemble based in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. We are a local group dedicated to researching and performing early music, most notably music from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Upcoming Concerts 2008
Thurs. Dec. 4th 8pm: Free concert at Trent U. in the Lady Eaton College dining hall. We'll be giving a shortened version of our Christmas concert free of charge, for anyone who can't make it to St. John's on the 14th.
Sunday Dec. 14th, 2:30 p.m. - Hurly Burly presents "In Sweetest Harmony", a concert of medieval holiday music. Tickets $10 at the door ($5 for seniors & students). Refreshments will be served during the intermission.

Repertoire & Instruments
Hurly Burly's music covers a wide range of time periods, from the 12th Century through to the early 17th Century. Some early period music we have performed includes selections from collections such as the Llibre Vermell (14th C.), Carmina Burana and Cantigas de Santa Maria, as well as works by composers such as Adam de la Halle (1200's), Gilles Binchois (1400-1460), Guillaume Dufay, and Josquin des Pres. Later period repertoire includes works by the likes of Thomas Ravenscroft, Susato, Byrd, Bassano, and madrigals from composers such as Thomas Morley (1557-1603) and Orazio Vecchi (1550-1605). We also write our own arrangements of period tunes and songs. Instruments used include recorders, harp, citole, psaltery, dulcimer, period fiddle, flute, rackett, lute-guitar, cornemus, and various percussion.
Generally the choir is project-based, that is, we decide on a theme for a concert or workshop and work towards that, usually doing a couple of concerts each year. However, when there is sufficient interest, we will sometimes organize informal music gatherings, such as bardic circles, music for dancing, music talks, and the like. We are also open to requests for demos and concerts for schools and charity organizations.

News & Projects
June 20th, 2008: Hurly Burly's spring concert took place on a Friday at Sadlier House (George St.) this year. We had a chance to try out the acoustics in the former dining hall, and found working in the new space to be quite an enjoyable experience. We did a sneak preview of some of the songs that will be gracing our upcoming CD, mostly medieval pieces from the Carmina Burana and the Cantigas de Santa Maria.
Spring/Summer 2008: We're working towards recording our second CD, which will be a collection of Medieval Cantigas de Santa Maria, songs from the Carmina Burana, and Medieval pilgrimage pieces. We'll be doing several recording sessions throughout the spring and summer, and will hopefully have the new CD available by our winter '08 concert, if not sooner.
Sunday, December 9th 2007 was Hurly Burly's annual Christmas concert. This year our theme was Thys Yool: A Concert of Uncommon Christmas Music from Across the Centuries. We performed with special guest Curtis Driedger, who joined us on fiddle for several pieces.
Winter 2007 - There's been a bit of a delay due to our members' various time constraints and the fact that, with a not-for-profit group, family and work always come first, but: Hurly Burly is still (finally!) planning the recording of our second CD! We're all very excited about getting a chance to record a second CD, since we feel we have grown so much as a group in the years since our first CD, and we're eager to reflect our long-standing love of music from the medieval period, especially around the time of the Cantigas de Santa Maria and the Carmina Burana, both of which will feature prominently on our next recording.
Sunday, June 10th 2007 was Hurly Burly's spring concert: Devotion, Debauchery and Delight: A concert of mostly 13th C. music as it would have been heard in courts, castles and taverns. We had a lot of fun with this one and we're pretty sure the audience did too! Our repertoire for this concert was largely drawn from the Carmina Burana and the Cantigas de Santa Maria (which we plan to visit again for our next CD), with a few other things thrown in for spice. We got to a new level with our instrumental arranging, which was great, and we're hoping the energy will continue through to the December concert.

Charities & Special Occasions
Hurly Burly is always open to doing demonstrations of music and dance for schools, charities and other organizations. We have also done theme weddings. We can perform casually, in formal attire, or in full period costume. If you have an event where you feel early music would be appropriate, feel free to contact us with the details.
