The first day of spring was heralded by flurries and near-zero temperatures in our neck of the woods – that, after a week of sunny shirt-sleeve-weather days reminiscent of June. I find myself oddly reassured to see nature being as unpredictable as ever. Hence the theme of today’s prompts, which will be the last of the Saturday Scribes prompts for the forseeable future. Here’s to a life full of surprises, to help keep the muses amused, and the writing fresh.
Theme: Capricious
Words/Phrases:
new-sprung
thaw
tumultuous
psyche

An old but good one for today. Seems appropriate, given that I woke up this April morning to a world covered in white – and it’s still snowing. I’ll be posting two new poems tomorrow on Thursday to make up for being a slacker today (will hopefully write at least one of them tonight, but it’s unlikely to make it onto the aetherial digital plane before tomorrow afternoon).
There’s a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference,
Where the Meanings, are –
None may teach it — Any –
‘Tis the Seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows — hold their breath –
When it goes, ’tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –
– Emily Dickinson

Been tied up with the usual real life things so far today, but there will be a proper* poem up before midnight tonight. (*if there is such a thing; for now it can be interpreted as “something I’ve actually put more than two minutes of effort into”).
In the meantime:
1.
distracted by a shaft of light
trees silhouetted on my computer screen
fish sifting pebbles on my right hand
on my left, a cooling cup of coffee
before me, shades of grey through leaded diamonds
the hyacinths in the kitchen window
smell like lilacs in the rain
